Maternity Beach Session – Why white dresses work so well for beach photos

You have a Maternity Session booked but no idea what to wear? I know the drill..

Buying a maternity dress for a photoshoot that you know you will only wear once can be a hard pill to swallow. So it probably feels like great news when you learn that your Maternity Photographer has a client closet with Maternity dresses that you can use for your session, right? No need to purchase something that will only sit and collect dust in the future.

The dress from this Maternity session at the beach is a new addition to my client closet, which means that you can use it for your upcoming maternity session. It’s a simple, white and flowy dress that gives a dreamy vibe. With its delicate fabric and ruffled seams, I imagine it speaking to all the romantic souls out there.

This dress is absolutely perfect for those golden hour beach sessions, but I imagine that it will be just as gorgeous in a mountain view setting.

Why does white dresses work so well for beach photoshoots?

The beach is such an appreciated place for photo sessions, with its simplistic look and feel. If you are drawn to the minimalistic vibe, the beach is your spot! But for a lot of our California beaches, there are little to no shade – which means that the light is STRONG. With all that strong light, white works exceptionally great since it doesn’t create too much of a contrast from the harsh sun rays.

Without getting too technical about the camera’s sensitivity to light etc, wearing something white (or light tones in general) brings out those creamy tones in your photos. All the tones of the sky and the water really comes out if you are wearing light toned clothing. And the creamy tones is what a lot of us especially love about beach photos.

Contrast and tones aside, white is a light and airy color and the beach is a place we associate with warm weather and brights days. Am I right? So wearing something that matches that vibe is a great way to build onto that warm and glowing feeling. If you are wearing something dark it might not communicate that warm summer feeling that you might be visualizing in your photos.

So I always love encouraging my clients to choose light tones for their beach sessions!
