What to Expect During a Family Photo Session Focused on Real Connection

When most people start searching for a family photographer, they picture one moment.

Everyone looking at the camera.

Everyone smiling at the same time.

That moment happens sometimes. And when it does, it’s lovely.

But it’s not what I’m waiting for.

Most of the time, I’m watching for what happens when no one is checking where the camera is. When attention drifts. When something pulls you back to each other instead of forward toward me.

That’s where the real story lives.

As a Los Angeles based family photographer, I work with families who want photos that feel like them—not like a performance. My sessions are built around connection, movement, and genuine moments rather than stiff posing.

Because years from now, the images you’ll treasure most probably won’t be the ones where everyone smiled perfectly at the camera.

They’ll be the ones that remind you how this season felt.

Family Photos Focused on Connection Instead of Perfection

During a family photo session, I’m always looking for the small moments of connection that happen naturally.

His hand on your back without thinking about it.
The squishy hugs that last a little longer than expected.
The way you lean into each other like it’s muscle memory.
The way your child fits into your arms right now, in this season.
The quick glance between siblings that says more than words ever could.
Genuine laughter—the kind that surprises you.
The way you look at each other when you forget anyone is watching.

Those moments don’t need to be created. They simply need to be noticed.

And that’s where I come in.

How I Guide Families During a Session

One of the biggest misconceptions about lifestyle family photography is that you’re left to figure everything out on your own.

You’re not.

I’ll gently guide you throughout the session with simple prompts and movement that help everyone relax and interact naturally.

Instead of asking you to stand perfectly still and smile, I might ask you to walk together, cuddle your little ones, play a game, do a race, or simply focus on each other for a moment.

The goal isn’t to create perfect poses.

The goal is to create space for genuine connection.

Because real love photographs beautifully.

What If My Kids Won’t Cooperate?

This is probably the question I hear most often from parents.

And the answer is simple:

Your kids don’t need to cooperate perfectly for us to create beautiful photos. In fact, some of my favorite images happen when children are simply being themselves.

Running barefoot through the grass.

Snuggling into your shoulder.

Showing off a rock they found.

Laughing at something completely unexpected.

As a family photographer, I’ve learned that children don’t need to perform. They just need room to be themselves, to play.

The little personalities, the energy, the chaos, the curiosity—that’s often what makes the photos feel meaningful years later.

Family Photography That Feels Easy

You don’t need to spend the entire session managing everyone’s behavior.

You don’t need to apologize when things feel a little chaotic.

You don’t need perfect outfits, perfect smiles, or perfect timing.

Whether we’re photographing your family on a Santa Monica beach, exploring a grassy field in the hills of Los Angeles, or documenting a slow morning at home, my goal is always the same:

To help your family relax, connect, and enjoy being together. The best photos happen when you stop worrying about the photos.

Why Real Moments Matter More Than Perfect Smiles

When families receive their galleries, the images they connect with most are rarely the perfectly posed ones.

It’s the image of your toddler wrapping their arms around your neck. The way your partner looks at you when you’re distracted. The laughter that wasn’t planned. The tiny hand reaching for yours.

The moments that remind you not just what your family looked like—but who you were together during this season of life.

Those are the photographs that grow more valuable with time.

Let’s Remember These Little Years

If you’re looking for a Los Angeles family photographer who focuses on real connection, natural emotion, and preserving the little years before they change again, I’d love to help tell your family’s story.

Because one day these busy, beautiful, chaotic little years will be gone.

And you’ll be so grateful you remembered them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Photo Sessions

Do we need to know how to pose?

Not at all. I’ll guide you throughout the session with simple prompts and movement that help everyone relax and interact naturally. My goal isn’t to create perfect poses—it’s to capture genuine connection and emotion.

Will we get any photos looking at the camera?

Absolutely. While my sessions focus on connection and candid moments, I always make time for a few classic family portraits where everyone is looking at the camera.

How long does a family photo session take?

My family sessions last between 60-90 mins. This gives us plenty of time for genuine moments, lots of play, breaks for snacks if needed – while still working well with young children’s attention spans and schedules.

What if my child is shy or takes time to warm up?

That’s completely okay. I never expect children to perform right away.

I usually start sessions with your family walking together while you’re holding your child, and I’ll stay at a distance at first. I want children to feel comfortable and have time to get used to me being there rather than having a camera immediately in their space.

I take time to connect with them, follow their lead, and create a relaxed environment where they can simply be themselves.

Some children are ready to play right away, while others need a little extra time—and both are completely normal.
