Pregnancy is one of the most transformative seasons of life.
For nine months, your body is doing something incredible. You’re growing a tiny human you’ll soon meet, love, and wonder how you ever lived without.
Yet despite how significant this chapter is, many expecting mothers hesitate when it comes to booking maternity photos. Some don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera. Others aren’t feeling their best during pregnancy. And some simply aren’t sure if maternity photography is worth it.
As a Los Angeles maternity photographer, I’ve photographed many mothers who felt exactly the same way before their session.
Here are five reasons why maternity photos become some of the most meaningful images families own.
1. Pregnancy Is a Short Season You’ll Never Experience the Same Way Again
At times, pregnancy can feel endless.
But when you look back years from now, you’ll realize just how quickly those nine months passed.
The tiny kicks. The excitement of wondering who your baby will be. The anticipation of meeting the little person growing inside you.
There is no other season quite like it.
Maternity photos allow you to preserve this chapter before it becomes a memory. They create something tangible that brings you back to this unique moment in your family’s story.

2. One Day Your Child Will Want to See These Photos
This is one of my favorite reasons to document pregnancy.
As children grow, they naturally become curious about their own story.
At some point, your child will ask questions like:
- Was I really inside your belly?
- What did you look like when you were pregnant with me?
- Did you know if I was a boy or girl?
Having maternity photos gives you a beautiful way to share those memories with them.
These photographs become part of your family’s history and a reminder that their story began long before they were born.

3. It’s a Chance to Celebrate Your Growing Family
Maternity photos aren’t only about your baby bump.
They’re about the people who already love this baby.
Whether it’s just you and your partner or your entire family, a maternity session gives you an opportunity to pause and celebrate this huge transition together.
Many of my favorite images happen when couples forget about the camera and simply enjoy being together.
The anticipation.
The excitement.
The quiet moments before everything changes.
Those emotions deserve to be remembered too.

4. You Don’t Have to Love Pregnancy to Appreciate Having Photos of It
This one is personal.
I wasn’t someone who loved being pregnant.
I was grateful for my pregnancies because they brought me my children, but I wouldn’t describe pregnancy as my favorite experience.
And yet, now that those days are behind me, I find myself missing parts of them.
I miss feeling those tiny kicks.
I miss wondering who my babies would become.
I miss that unique feeling of carrying them close every moment of the day.
The truth is that you don’t have to love every part of pregnancy to recognize that it’s an important chapter worth remembering.
Maternity photos allow you to honor the journey, even if it wasn’t always comfortable.

5. You Deserve to Feel Beautiful During This Season
Pregnancy can be exhausting.
Your body is changing. Your energy may be lower than usual. Some days simply getting dressed feels like an accomplishment.
A maternity session gives you permission to slow down and celebrate yourself.
It’s an opportunity to wear something beautiful, spend time with the people you love, and see yourself the way your family sees you.
Strong.
Beautiful.
Capable.
Growing life.
Many mothers tell me they were nervous before their session and surprised by how much they enjoyed the experience.
The Best Time to Schedule Maternity Photos
Most maternity sessions take place between 30 and 35 weeks of pregnancy.
At this stage, your bump is beautifully visible while you’re typically still comfortable enough to enjoy the session.
If you’re considering maternity photos, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to secure your preferred date.
